Botox or Dysport? How many units would I need for my forehead wrinkles? (Photo)

I use both and as such, really do not have a personal opinion.  Dysport is a little cheaper, but lasts less time and has a higher risk of spreading to muscles in which you may not want it to spread to.  Having said that, the most important decision is not whether you are getting a savings, but whether you are finding the right person with the appropriate experience to do the injections.

Although everyone responds a bit differently to different products, Dysport diffuses more than BOTOX so more product is typically required to see the same outcome. If this is your first time trying these injectables, it's difficult to predict exactly how much you'll need. Your best course of action is to visit a highly experienced injector, then follow their recommendations with regards to which product (and how much) would be best to help you meet your goals. I use Botox and Dysport in my practice and do not have a preference. Typically one uses 3 units of Dysport for every 1 unit of Botox so the price difference is nominal. The most important factor is to find a licensed physician with experience who you are comfortable with. 

Hello,Thank you for sharing your question and photo.Typically you need 2.5-3x as many Dysport units compared to Botox units so the cost is approximately the same. Both products work well and most patients will find they cannot tell the difference between the two. I compare Botox and Dysport to Coke and Pepsi. I recommend my patients to try both and find their own personal preference.I would start conservatively if you are only planning to treat the forehead and not the glabella (area between the eyebrows), as sometimes it can cause the brows to feel heavy due to unopposed paralysis. I recommend simultaneous treatment of both the forehead and glabella for a more balanced result. 10-12 units would be a good place to start for the forehead alone. As always, please see an experienced, board-certified injector.Hope this helps!

Each botulinum toxin type A product exhibits differences compared to the others.  So each of these is dosed slightly differently.  Typically, to obtain a rough dosing equivalence between Dysport and Botox Cosmetic, one would utilize 2 - 2.5 times more Dysport than Botox Cosmetic.  This means that one unit of Botox Cosmetic has about the same effect as 2 units or 2.5 units of Dysport.

When utilizing Botox Cosmetic and Dysport, if dosing equivalence is achieved, then the products should have a very similar efficacy and duration.

In addition to shopping price, you should also shop for quality, knowledge and experience in your injector.

With respect to your question about how many units you need... that is difficult to assess from just a picture.  Decisions regarding dosing are based upon the dynamic movement of the muscle, and potentially the surrounding muscle groups as well.  Selecting the proper dose for treatment of the forehead will also depend upon the resting brow position.  And then, how much relaxation you want, or can reasonably achieve without disturbing the resting brow position, is also taken into account when deciding what dosing is appropriate.

Both products are great and work very well. In studies that compare them it is difficult to tease out major difference but some providers believe that one may start working a day or two before the other- bottom line is that whether you see a result a day faster is not incredibly important to most patients since they both last for months.  The dose required for each is different however to achieve the same result, in general you can use the rule of 3 meaning that 10 units of botox will be as effective as 30 units of dysport.  It is difficult to determine how many units you will want without meeting with you and reviewing what your goals are- some people prefer a completely "frozen" forehead without much movement at all while others what some movement but reduction in wrinkles.  Obviously these require different doses.  In general, I would estimate that 20 units of Botox or 60 units of Dysport is commonly used to treat the forehead.  Not everyone is a good candidate for this treatment so please see a Board Certified or Board Eligible Plastic Surgeon to evaluate if you may benefit. The amount needed can vary with desired results and severity of the wrinkles. However, Dysport to Botox units is about 3:1. Dysport and Botox results last 3-4 months.  It takes more Dysport verses Botox for similar results. The cost of dysport is a little cheaper. However dysport can spread to other muscles more easily.  Just make sure your injector is experienced in the use of neurotoxins.  Enjoy your results, which ever you choose.       

Hi and I wish you well with your search and decision. Since your photo does not show your eyes, nor does it show the resting brow position as it relates to your eyes, I would not be able to offer an opinion about your specific treatment placement or dosing. 
That said, I can help you understand pricing shenanigans. The conversion factor between the dose of Botox and that of Dysport is 2-3:1. This means that if you need 20 units of Botox to treat an area, that same area would need 40-60 units of Dysport to achieve the comparable desired effect. Many injectors prefer Dysport over Botox in some areas and Botox over Dysport in others, so you should choose an experienced injector who is able to customize your treatment, basing your decision on the quality of the results, instead of basing your decision on price. 
So $4/unit Dysport cannot be compared to $11/unit of Botox, since you would need 2-3 units of Dysport for every unit of Botox required, so Dysport becomes $8-12/dose site, depending on whether the injector uses 2X or 3X units, which means Dysport costs just as much if not more than Botox.

You need 3x as many Dysport units to one botox unit, so pricing for the 2 products end up being about even in most offices. Most people try one or the other. Botox has been around the longest and is the most well known. Results are pretty similar however and really depend on the patients preferences. 
Some individuals will find that one works better for them than the other like they would any other product with multiple brands. I recommend try one for a few treatments and then the other and compare which one is for you.
