Fixing open bite without pulling teeth? (Photo)

Question

Hi! I have been to a orthodontic and discussed my teeth. She said that I probably need Jaw surgery as well as braces. She also said that i probably need to pull out some of my teeth to be able to close my open bite. I read some articles that say that pulling teeth is not nessecary and you can widen the jaw instead to get better results. Do you think this is true in my case? / Thanks!

hi,from the provided photos my impression is that you would not necessarily need teeth removed. you could have something called a "differential impaction lefort 1 osteotomy" where there back of the top jaw is moved upwards so that the open bite is closed. obviously you need to be assessed formally by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to be sure.julian

Since only the teeth are showing, it is hard to evaluate your facial growth pattern which is important related to 'how to fix' it. But yes, you need not extract teeth in many cases; and the orthodontist has to 'shape' the upper and lower arches, to 'match'; since in your case the lower front arch shape is more "v" than 'U" shaped. Talk to the orthodontist or surgeon as well.
