Is a chin osteotomy better than an implant?

The chin implant is placed in a pocket beneath the soft tissue pad of the chin and provides a strictly horizontal improvement. In some cases, this may deepen the mentolabial fold. The geniolpasty surgery moves the natural chin forward and can also provide some degree of additional length. Moving the natural chin forward provides a more aesthetically pleasing result because the muscle attachments are unaffected.. Chin implants are used when there is not a severe degree of chin recession.

For the patent who wants to avoid a chin implant, a sliding genioplasty is the natural alternative. It is a very effective procedure that has a bit more recovery than a chin implant. But then avoids an issues, short or long-term, of an implant.

 Osteotomies placed in the mandible alone are usually performed by an Oral Surgeon under general anesthesia in a hospital setting with an overnight stay since it is much more invasive. Placement of a chin implant is performed under local anesthesia which takes about 30 minutes as an outpatient procedure. The chin implant can also be removed quite easily if ever necessary. A full set of pictures and an in-person examination are going to be required to make a determination about the size, the thickness, the shape of the chin implant to be used.  For many before-and-after chin implant examples, please see video below
