I have low hemoglobin. Is it possible to get an iron infusion before a BBL surgery this month?

Hi my hemoglobin is 10.7 I am scheduled to have surgery this month. I took a in-house test at a clinic and was told it was 11.6 but when they sent the result in it came back 10.7 again after 10days and me eating everything to raise my hemoglobin. Is it possible to get a iron infusion before a BBL surgery? Thank you for your help.

Great question!  You definitely will need your hemoglobin to be within the normal range before proceeding.  Depending on the reason for the low hemoglobin, you can take iron supplements and eat foods high in iron.  Every surgeon has his/her own protocol to increase iron so I would speak with them to see what they are comfortable with.Best of luck and hope this information helps!

you should be healthy and your lab results should be within normal limits prior to elective procedures in order to avoid complications. Every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

Have your labs repeated a few days before your scheduled surgery.  If they remain low, ask your PS if he/she recommends that you postpone your BBL until they reach a satisfactory level. Besides eating dark leafy veggies, liver, lentils, almonds, dried apricots, beets, and other high iron foods, your PS or internist could prescribe iron pills and Vitamin C based upon the cause of the anemia.Kenneth Hughes, MD, ABPS Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

First of all you don't necessarily know that your hemoglobin level is low because of low iron.  Beautiful CBC panel with differential to determine that.  Even if this is iron deficiency anemia it takes several months to restore hemoglobin once you start taking iron supplements.  Iron cannot be given as an infusion. It can be given as intramuscular injections though most people recommend taking it by mouth.  You should discuss this with your plastic surgeon.  I'm guessing you're traveling for surgery. Most people who have surgery with local plastic surgeons will have the plastic surgeon order the tests and they will review them with the patient.  This way the patients don't need to ask questions on real self but can get appropriate before and after care from their operating surgeon.  Perhaps I'm wrong but this theme seems to be recurring.  As always discuss this with your plastic surgeon before the surgery.  Your hemoglobin level is on the low-end of normal and I don't think you should be too concerned unless your surgeon is sloppy and does not control bleeding while during the procedure.  If that's the case you could conceivably need a blood transfusion during or after surgery.  This seems to be a little more common with combined extensive surgery in certain locations.  Typically liposuction and fat transfer has fairly low blood loss so you should be fine.  Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
