Stitches coming through incision after otoplasty? (Photo)

Question

I had otoplasty about 8 months ago and just noticed this thread-like thing sticking out of my incision. Is this just a stitch? Do I need to visit my surgeon? Can I just clip it myself?

Thank you for your question.  It appears you may have a suture (stitch) that is extruding through your incision.  I would suggest that you follow up with your surgeon for evaluation and, most likely, removal of this suture.  This is not uncommon that this can happen, and it is important to follow up with your surgeon to prevent a complication or infection. I hope that this helps!-David Gilpin

It appears that a suture or stitch has poked through your skin after the surgery.  I would advise you to see your plastic surgeon so that she/he can remove the suture.  This is not uncommon.  Good luck!

It looks like a suture is extruding through the skin.  It should be removed.  I would recommend visiting your surgeon for removal and ongoing incision care, until fully healed.

One can see that a suture has pierced through the skin and is lying exposed. It should be removed to prevent infection occurring.

Many surgeons use permanent stitches for an otoplasty. If these become exposed and or infected it is unlikely that the wound will heal up until the whole stitch and the knot has been removed. If a stitch is protruding through the scar and is just cut off it may leave the stitch material behind which may go on acting as a focus for infection, discharging and presenting a problem.I advise you to return and see the surgeon who carried out the procedure. If they are unavailable then you should see a surgeon who is suitably qualified and experienced in this type of surgery.Best wishes
