16 days post-op. When can I start using scar cream? They look like they haven’t fully healed. (photos)

If you feel that these areas are not fully closed or if you notice drainage or bleeding, hold off on the scar therapy. It is best to wait until you are sure that all these areas have healed to initiate scar treatment. I tell my patients to begin scar therapy after the Steri Strips have been removed and all areas are healed without openings, drainage, or scabs. You appear to be healing well from the photos, but if you notice any areas that haven’t completely healed, do not start scar treatment. As always, your surgeon has the final say on post-operative instructions and restrictions, so reach out to your surgeon’s office if you need further clarification. For scars, I close all of my incisions in 5 layers and do not use absorbable sutures because they cause inflammation and worse scarring. I tape all of my incisions in the office visits once a week for six weeks after surgery to improve the appearance. After taping, I start my patients on a scar gel therapy for 3 months that they have to put on their incisions twice daily.You should discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon as different surgeons have different approaches in scar management.
