When is it appropriate to start putting scar cream after breast augmentation? 2 weeks post-op.

Thank you for your question. In my practice, we typically suggest that our patients begin scar treatment around weeks 6-8. Although both scar gel and silicone sheeting strips can be used, most of our patients prefer the silicone sheeting. It is also important to remember to be patient about the final result, as it can take up to 6-12 months to heal. However, if you are having problems with skin irritation it is best to consult with your operating surgeon about this. Best of luck!

For my patients having a breast augmentation, I recommend they wait until all of the dermabond skin glue comes off of the incisions and the incisions are completely closed and healed. The glue typically takes anywhere from 3-6 weeks to come off. I recommend discussing specific post op instructions with your plastic surgeon. Best of luck!

Every surgeon has different post op instructions. I would reccommed you ask your board certified surgeon to see what he reccommends of when to start the scar cream. I tell my patients 6 weeks all depends on the healing process.

For scars, I close all of my incisions in 5 layers and do not use absorbable sutures because they cause inflammation and worse scarring. I tape all of my incisions in the office visits once a week for six weeks after surgery to improve the appearance. After taping, I start my patients on a scar gel therapy for 3 months that they have to put on their incisions twice daily.

You should discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon as different surgeons have different approaches in scar management.

Recommendations regarding scar management will vary among surgeons.I would discuss this with your surgeon to get his or her recommendations. If you have already had some sort of issue with one of your incisions, it is even more important to keep your surgeon involved. I typically start with silicone strips 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure, provided the incisions look good and appear to be healing properly.  Best wishes.

 

Thank you for your question.  This question does vary Dr. to Dr. and should be discussed with your board certified plastic surgeon.  We like to use a scar gel therapy at the 2 or 3 week postop depending on how the patient is healing.  Making sure your incisions are fully closed is important  especially  If you are having irritation from the scar cream.

Your best resource of information would always be your surgeon as each has a different post op protocol and your surgeon will know best abut your condition. usually scar creams are used a month after surgery depending on the rate of wound healing.

Hi Marlene and thank you so much for your question! I discuss with my patient's that I like them to wait 6 weeks before beginning any scar treatment. I ahve found that anything earlier just causes irritation to the incisions.
