Can I stay on Semaglutide (Wegovy) when I was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and prescribed Methimazole 5mg?

Not taking any other medication. Cravings are bad for sweets and the injection is the only thing that works for weight loss for me. I see Methimazole has a side effect of weight gain. I don’t want that, so is it safe to take wegovy and methimazole at the same time? Thank you.

Semaglutide and Methimazole are used for different conditions. Semaglutide (Wegovy) is used for weight management and type 2 diabetes, while Methimazole is used to treat hyperthyroidism. There is no known direct interaction between these two drugs. However, thyroid disorders can affect metabolism and weight, so starting a new medication for hyperthyroidism could potentially affect the efficacy of weight management medication.

It's also important to note that both Semaglutide and Methimazole can have side effects, and combining them could potentially increase the risk of side effects.

The healthcare provider will need to consider all these factors when deciding whether to continue Semaglutide treatment in a patient who has just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and started on Methimazole. It would be advisable for the patient to have a discussion with their healthcare provider about all their medications, their current health status, and their treatment goals.

It should be fine to take these medications together.  However you may need adjustment in your dosages with weight loss.  It is best to review all medications with your physician for optimal efficacy and safety.

Both drugs are considered safe to take together. The side effect of weight gain would be due to the medication lowering your thyroid levels. Therefore, keep regular follow ups with your doctor to check thyroid levels. For your sweet cravings, I recommend increasing protein intake significantly for breakfast and lunch and watch those cravings melt away.
