Can I have a hernia mesh repaired with a tummy tuck? (Photo)

I am a 36 yr old mom of 5! I had a hernia repaired years ago and it needs to be removed as it’s poking through my skin and hurts when I wear pants that touch or rub it, I also have a lipoma on my chest I’ve already had it scanned and it’s just a lipoma non cancerous. I’d like to know if I could have the lipoma removed during breast implant/lift surger I may also need a nipple revision and a tummy tuck with belly button revision and hernia mesh removed or repaired all at once?

All of these procedures are technically possible. However, with the mesh removal some of these procedures may need to be staged. I would make sure to consult with both a general surgeon and a board certified plastic surgeon to ensure that all possible complications are being taken into account.

Yes, the mesh can be repaired at the same time as the tummy tuck. I routinely use mesh on patients who are not planning future pregnancies. In terms of your breasts, I recommend The Bellesoma Method. This will reshape your breast tissue creating upper pole fullness without implants, elevate them higher on the chest wall and more medial to increase your cleavage. Vertical scars are avoided, nipple sensation (in 95%) and the ability to breast feed are maintained. The incision from this technique will allow access to remove the lipoma of the left upper chest.

There is no doubt that abdominal surgery, breast lift, and augmentation should be a priority. The mesh should be placed behind the rectus muscles to give you good support and avoid extrusion in the long run. Breast lift and augmentation with implants are sufficient for a single stage; I would recommend dealing with lipoma and nipple as separate procedures before or after the lift. A general surgeon could repair the hernia and then the plastic surgeon could do the tummy tuck. Perhaps you could find a plastic surgeon to do both procedures, however, insurance will not cover both and may not cover the hernia if the tummy tuck is done by the same surgeon.  If you want insurance to cover the hernia and the lipoma, they will probably need to be done as a separate procedure.

Many of your procedures can be combined, but an exam is needed to know if it is recommended to have them all addressed at once.  You may consider having the lipoma addressed separately.  The mesh may be able to be combined with the tummy tuck.  I encourage you to begin by scheduling a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon near you.  Be sure the surgeon you select is double board certified in general as well as plastic surgery.
