How long before I know if my surgery worked for my snoring??

Question

I had a septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and nasal valve implants on Dec 19th of 2018 for severe snoring. I am 3 weeks post op and am still snoring a lot. I would like to know how long before I know if this surgery worked or if I need to go back to my ENT for plan B to help with snoring. Thank you so much!

Snoring can be caused by multiple factors. A deviated septum is just one. I would allow 6-12 weeks to elapse, following surgery, to allow for swelling to subside.  If the snoring persists, you should discuss with your surgeon other possible causes for your persistent snoring.Good luck!

Hello Kvaughn5,Snoring is caused by many factors.  It can be from weakness of the tissues around the voice box, an elongated uvula (the dangling thing in the back of the throat), large tonsils, a large tongue, a floppy tongue at its base, an elongated soft palate (the soft part of the top of the mouth at the back of the throat), or nasal obstruction from a deviated septum.  If the deviated septum was the source of the snoring then as the swelling from surgery went away it would have resolved.  If at three weeks you still have severe snoring you likely need to follow up with your ENT for further evaluation.  I hope this helps and good luck.

Dear Kvaughn5, Snoring can be caused from many different factors and a complete evaluation would need to be made. Assuming that the ENT surgeon has diagnosed the deviated septum and turbinates as the cause of the snoring, then once the swelling dissipates form this procedure you should have some resolve.
