Hello, 7 months ago a nurse injector at my derm recommended under eye Botox to address wrinkles. I woke up the next day to extreme swelling which eventually settled to a plane of fluid where lower eye meets cheek. 7 months later my jelly roll on right eye is still slumped and swollen and there’s a large line horizontally across lower eye. Plastic surgeonsaid muscles are so over stretched from Btx that it will take another year from now to recover if at all. Derm disagreed. Who is right?
Answer: The muscles are not “overstretched.” Botox is a fantastic product but it can cause unwanted muscle atrophy and weakness. Injectors often fail to appreciate how important the lower eyelid muscle roll is. It basically holds the lower eyelid up against the eye. The treatment can slump the eyelid. What you call swelling is likely due to this effect. The Botox weakens and atrophies the muscle. Recovery can take much longer than simply letting the Botox wear off. I think the time frame for recovery suggested by the plastic surgeon is realistic. In the mean time, please doing double down with other treatments.

Answer: Eye muscles stretched from Botox Botox relaxes the muscles that it is injected into- but should not stretch out the muscles. The effects of Botox should wear off in 3-4 months for most people.

Answer: Lower eyelid swelling after Botox injection Application off pressure overnight may help this problem; soft padding and moderate pressure. That will take care of swelling. Good luck.
