What are the pros and cons of open vs closed rhinoplasty?

What's the pros and cons of open vs closed rhinoplasty? Noting open method will obviously cause more scarring Can they achieve the same goal aesthetically? For bridge augmentation and tip plasty (narrowing the tip) can we expect the same results with both methods ?

Dear Bubble, good question . Open and closed rhinoplasties , both have pros and cons. Surgeons choose closed or open rhinoplasty depending on their training and comfort level for doing open or closed rhinoplasty. Surgeons may be proficient in both both , but choose a certain technique for a particular nose . I think you should choose the surgeon based on her/his reputation , qualification , before after pictures and your comfort level. And whatever that surgeon recommends -open or closed technique -that will be best for you. Open technique has one extra scar , in columella . It is usually not of much significance. Thats the only difference for you.

Open rhinoplasty give the surgeon the MOST CONTROL during the operation because the structure is exposed fully and can be altered fully. Anyone who wants extensive tip-plasty, especially narrowing, I perform open. Closed rhinoplasty doesn't give as much control for me when I want to narrow the tip because of carefully placed suturing. Closed rhinoplasty is good for the bridge and hump reduction and minimal tip alterations. Closed rhinoplasty has slightly less swelling overall, but the big advantage of closed rhinoplasty is the DURATION of swelling is much less. Open rhinoplasty swelling lasts longer. The columella scar with open is very good long-term and in my opinion is not the reason to avoid open rhinoplasty. At one year it is imperceptible. I do a lot of revision rhinoplasty from previous surgeons and the scars are difficult for me to find sometimes. So, to compromise your tip results to avoid this scar is a bad idea in my opinion.
