Botulinum toxin was first isolated in the 20s, was first used therapeutically in 1968, and became approved in 1989 for eye issues. It has been used heavily for cosmetic use since 2002, and it was the first aesthetic drug ever approved. All that is to say...it has a lot of safety data behind it. Recent evidence (coming out this week) proves that botulinum toxin does NOT enter your brain as it's distant cousin tetanus toxin does, which is where that theory came from. Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are the 3 botulinum toxins approved for cosmetic use in the US. They all work in the same way, at the presynaptic terminal blocking the release of acetylcholine - making the nerve temporarily unable to communicate with the muscle. It is broken down as a protein in our body with liver metabolism. Effects are temporary, and repeated use serves to take tension off of your skin, relaxing lines and wrinkles. At 60, this can provide a huge improvement when done properly, and that is where you can get into trouble at 60. To ensure you are receiving the highest level of care, seek out a modernly trained, new-school dermatologic surgeon, oculoplastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon who is board certified and fellowship trained in one of these "core four" cosmetic specialties. Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery help to identify a highly trained surgeon.Cameron Chesnut#realself500 Physician
Yes Botox is very safe to use at 60 years old and older. Be sure you go to a highly trained injector for your treatment . Best of luck
Botox is safe in those older than 60, and most studies to investigate Botox have been in patients older than 18.
Yes, Botox issafe to be used to treat patients over the age of 60. However, it is alwaysimportant that you discuss your medical conditions and any medications/herbalremedies you might be taking, to ensure that Botox is safe for you, regardlessof your age.
Although no ill effects of using Botox after 60, it is important to have an experienced injector who understands the anatomy of the aging face. With laxity of skin over underlying muscles, you must proceed with caution not to excerbate this laxity, especially when treating crow's feet. These injections can enhance undereye bags and festoons.
You have asked in excellent question. In short, the answer to your question is yes. In the clinical trials in which Botox was evaluated for its effectiveness in treating from lines, there was an upper age limits to the patient's included in the study. However, we have been using Botox to treat facial spasms for more than 30 years. We have treated numerous patients over the age of 60 throughout the past 3 decades and Botox has been both safe and effective in all age groups treated.
No Problem! As always with any medical procedure or treatment, be sure of the credentials of your provider.
Yes, Botox is safe for patients in their 60's. However, it is very important to only have the procedure performed by an expert injector to reduce the risk of a droopy brow.
Yes, Botox can be given at any age in adults. I regularly treat patients with Botox for both cosmetic and medical reasons (e.g. Benign Essential Blepharospasm) over 60. The anatomy and areas of concern are the main issues. As we age the tissue planes can change and there can be more risk for unwanted over-dissemination of the injected Botox, but an experienced injector will be comfortable with these issues. I always start conservative on new patients as you can always do more at a subsequent injection to avoid unwanted side-effects (drooping etc). Dry eye issues are more common as we age, so some older patients do better with lower doses around the eyes to avoid over weakening the eyelid closure muscles (orbicularis).
The effect of Botox does not change with age, and it is safe at any age. A large proportion of the patients I treat with Botox, Xeomin and Dysport are in fact over the age of 60, and they have very good results.
