Who performs Rhinoplasty? Should they go to a surgeon that only does nose jobs?

Are there certain credentials a person should make sure my doctor has? What does it mean if a doctor is board certified? Can doctors perform rhinoplasty if they aren't board certified? Is it safe?

To start you want to make sure your rhinoplasty surgeon is board certified in either facial plastic surgery or plastic surgery. Board certification in one of those fields isn't enough, though, as not all plastic surgeons regularly perform rhinoplasty.  It's important to find out how often your potential surgeon performs rhinoplasty.Equally important is to review the results of other patients the surgeon has performed surgery on. The before and after gallery of results gives a good window in their overall aesthetic. Since rhinoplasty is considered the most difficult cosmetic facial procedure, it is wise to chose your surgeon carefully. Doctors who have specific training in this area are Facial Plastic Surgeons and General Plastic Surgeons. Additionally, since experience and a sense of aesthetics vary greatly between surgeons, you should review prior work done by any prospective surgeon to see how he has handled cases that are similar to yours. Look at his "befores" and "afters".You should see how many rhinoplasties he does in a week and how many he has performed over his entire career. Also, does his idea of what would look good on you match yours? Do you know anybody who has gone to that surgeon for a rhinoplasty? Do any of the doctors you see for general medical care have any recommendations? And, finally, what is being said about him on the social media?

Board certification in plastic surgery or facial plastic surgery/otolaryngology is very important as that ensures that the doctor is trained specifically in rhinoplasty and has passed rigorous exams testing them on their knowledge on rhinoplasty and other cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Any doctor can perform a rhinoplasty but you would want a doctor that has the specific training. Besides credentials, make sure that the surgeon you choose performs rhinoplasty frequently as this procedure requires a lot of experience and a large volume of cases to be performed expertly.

I would suggest looking for someone who is a board certified plastic surgeon or otolaryngologist with a high-volume rhinoplasty practice.  Make sure they show you photographs of previous work and understand what you are looking to accomplish.  Having to revise a nose is a much harder task underscoring the importance of getting it right the first time.  Any type of doctor can perform rhinoplasty - make sure you do your homework!

Any licensed physician can perform rhinoplasty but go to a surgeon who is board certified in Plastic Surgery or Facial Plastic Surgery. Select an experienced surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty and can can show you many results that you like in patients who had noses like yours.
