Marijuana use after liposuction?

Question

About a week ago I had Lipo done on my abdomen, thighs and upper arms. My doctor told me not to smoke cigarettes after surgery as the nicotine will constrict blood flow and effect the overall healing (I don't smoke cigarettes anyways). My question is would smoking pure marijuana do anything to jeopardize the healing of my lipo? How soon after would be safe to start again?

I would never advocate any type of drugs or smoking to any of my patients ever especially in the post operative phase, however, with that said, many of my patients have done this without consequence and with help in any pain post procedure.  However, it can increase your appetite so I suggest being very careful and following your physicains post operative regimen.  Best, Dr. Emer.

I doubt that modest use of marijuana after your liposuction will have any effect. However, the specific medical changes induced by marijuana use are not fully understood.

I would not recommend smoking anything while you are taking any pain medication. I would suggest discussing this with your surgeon. Some street marijuana is not "pure."

Other than stimulating the appetite, which could potentially lead to weight gain, I see no reason why you could not engage in some marijuana use if it is appropriate and, I suppose, legal where you are. Inhaling any form of smoke causes damage to our body, including increasing the risk for lung cancer and buildup of carbon monoxide. The famous singer Bob Marley, who was a big fan of smoking marijuana, died of lung cancer. The total amount of smoke inhaled by moderate marijuana users is quite small in relation to cigarette smokers. A safer alternative is oral consumption.
