How well does Botox For TMJ work? (photos)

Question

I suffer from TMJ I work in sales so I'm always stressed and talking which have aggravated my TMJ to flare up more often. I get a tight jaw, facial pain, earache, stiff shoulder and neck and worst of all horrible migraines that last for days. Not only has TMJ affected my health but I've noticed my jaw line isn't very strong I naturally have a round face but I never had a double chin and weak jaw line like I do now. Will. Botox help cosmetically as well as helping my pain?

Botox may be able to temporarily alleviate the pain you are feeling due to the injection causing the masseter muscles to relax. Because you are in so much pain it is definitely worth giving it a try. In regards to the facial shape, specifically the double chin and weak jawline you are noticing, Botox can help diminish the size of the masseter muscle, making the appearance of the lower face less square. However, it will not change the appearance of a double chin or weak jawline.

Hi j.bella,So sorry to hear about all of your stress. Given the amount of pain you are in, and the excellent safety profile of Botox, I think it is probably worth trying. Botox can be very helpful for TMD and migraines; however, it does not work for everyone. In terms of aesthetics, keep in mind that Botox is injected into the masseter muscles, which are at the back of the jawline (towards your ear), so will not affect the fullness you are seeing closer to your chin. Botox can be a great treatments for TMJ condition and when done properly, it can improve pain and tightness as well as several other symptoms. It is important that you see an experienced doctor who is familiar with Botox TMJ treatments. Botox to the masseter gives a temporary relief by relaxing the clenching muscles that cause TMJ pain and cosmetically can shape the jawline. If this doesn't help the TMJ pain, a maxillofacial surgeon would be best for internal muscle treatment.  Best, Dr. Emer

By injecting the masseter, it can also help to slim the face though will likely not effect the jawline or double chin. Botox is a safe and effective treatment for TMJ syndrome.  It works by reducing the tension in you large jaw muscles, the masseters.  Botox relaxes these muscles which will reduce the pain and also the size of the muscle. Your jaw muscles appear to be enlarged and the Botox will help to make them smaller.  The only downside of Botox for TMJ is that it must be repeated in 4-6 months.
