If the root is dead, and the crown can be lengthened, can the tooth hold a new crown? Attached is my x-ray (Photo)

Recently, one of my cavity fillings fell out, with chipping at the edges of the tooth. My dentist referred me to an endodontist for root canal. Since I'm in no pain the root may have died, and she recommended crown lengthening for new crown. My dentist says she cannot replace the crown because of not enough tooth structure. She recommends an implant, for which I may need the sinuses to be lifted, and I do not want such an invasive procedure. What is you recommendation based on the x-ray?
