Can mega hair transplants of close to 5000 grafts fail despite done by a skilled doctor?

5000 grafts seem like an extreme amount of harvesting and the length of surgery time or graft out of the body time will contribute to growth and results.  It required extreme care and expertise of the doctor and staff.

It is possible for any size hair transplant to not grow. This is however, very rare in the hands of a skill surgeon and team. It is not possible to evaluate your situation with the little information provided. Would recommend that you visit with your surgeon and ask the question why this occurred. If you still do not get a satisfactory answer a second opinion might be needed. We have had numerous great outcomes with mega-sessions.

It is better to see your photos  in order to understand the problem you have,  and estimate how much graft do we need to cover area and cost of operation. 

If done properly, a beard and Body hair transplant can provide nice coverage and help conceal the scalp.

First of all, I do not know of any full-time hair transplant surgeons in the USA that would recommend 5,000 grafts in a single session. There are issues associated with over harvesting or harvesting outside the safe donor area. Continue your research, if you had a failure a year ago and a recent 3,000 unit session, I would have concerns about your donor area for another session.

If you are pushing your number of grafts there is risks. If it is done with FUE, these grafts will cause donor site depletion with an additional 5000 grafts, Risks are always present but if you are concerned, get a second opinion as that always helps reduce the risks.  See my post in the web reference below which discusses what happens when there are too many FUE grafts taken from the donor area
