I’m having a circumferential abdominoplasty next month, and I’m starting to plan for a successful recovery. I’ve read many recommendations to wear button up shirts while recovering, and I’m wondering why that is preferred over just a loose pullover that can be put on without raising the arms over the head. Are button ups a recommendation to avoid pulling on the incision? Also, bras. Should I plan on wearing sports bras while I recover? Thank you!
Answer: Clothing Recommendations for Recovery After Circumferential Abdominoplasty Hello Maseca2319, and thank you for your question about clothing during recovery after a circumferential abdominoplasty. During recovery, clothing plays a key role in ensuring comfort and minimizing strain on your incisions. Button-up or zip-up shirts are often recommended because they are easier to put on and take off without lifting your arms over your head, which could cause discomfort or tension on your incisions. Avoiding overhead motions is particularly important to reduce stress on your abdominal area and prevent unnecessary pulling or stretching that could interfere with healing. For bras, soft, wireless sports bras or compression bras are typically ideal during recovery. These provide gentle support without applying pressure to the surgical area or causing irritation. Ensure the bra is easy to put on, such as a front-closure design, to avoid unnecessary movement that might strain your abdomen. Additionally, plan to wear loose-fitting, soft pants or garments with an elastic waistband, as these will accommodate swelling and not press on your incision sites. A high-waisted compression garment will likely be provided by your surgeon, which you'll wear for a significant portion of your recovery to help control swelling and support your healing tissues. By choosing the right clothing, you can make your recovery more comfortable and promote optimal healing. I hope this helps answer your question, and best of luck with your upcoming surgery! Sincerely, J. Timothy Katzen, MD

Answer: Circumferential Abdominoplasty Recovery Thank you for your question about recovery from circumferential abdominoplasty. For specific questions like this and about your recovery in general, it is best to speak directly with your doctor or doctor’s representative – such as his or her nurse, or the physician on call for the practice. You will likely get many differing opinions from members of the RealSelf Community, but they have not personally seen or examined you. Nobody should know you or your unique set of circumstances better than your doctor. If you feel you are not being listened to or you are doubting your doctor’s recommendations, then it is certainly within your rights to seek a second opinion and get the advice from another board certified physician. This should be done through an in-person consultation with a thorough evaluation, including a review of your history, review of all prior treatment and with a physical examination. Obviously, if you think that you are having a medical emergency or other serious problem, you should call 911 and/or go to your nearest emergency room. Best Wishes.

Answer: Tummy Tuck Hello and thank you for your question. Big, comfy clothes! Button up shirts will the most comfortable, and easy to take on and off. Loose sweatpants will also be the easiest. A sports bra is a good choice. Just be as comfortable as you can be and take the time to heal. Best wishes!

Answer: Clothing I would wear loose comfortable clothing that is fairly easy to take on and off. Since your arms are not involved with surgery, pull overs should not be a problem. For posterior incisions, you don't want to overly stretch your arms.

Answer: Postopertive protocol Dear Maseca2319, I understand your concern. It is best that you consult your plastic surgeon regarding post operative care and management (i.e including massage techniques and timing) specific to your case. Your surgeon knows your condition well and has preferences on when and what to use for faster healing and recovery. Post operative care and management depends on the type of surgery performed and the technique used during surgery among other factors. It is best, however, that you follow your plastic surgeon's advice on post operative care management for a smooth and faster healing and recovery.
