Dark spots on forehead, chest, neck (Photo)

Question

I have had these dark spots on my chest, neck and forehead since I was younger. I believe they're birthmarks, but not entirely sure. They look similar to cafe-au-lait spots and are very splotchy. I also have something similar on my forehead but not sure if it’s related. Whenever I have extensive sun exposure, it’s usually the outer rims of my forehead that get darker. The spots on my forehead also have a weird leathery texture. Is there any way to remove this and to clear them?

Fractional laser is an amazing and highly effective treatment in our office. We use the laser treatment to help with acne scars, large pores, fine wrinkles, tissue collagen loss, scars, sebaceous hyperplasia, active acne, and for brightening dark pigmentation. Although there are very strong fractional lasers such as CO2 laser, we use lighter treatments for corrective skincare and maintenance of results. Our Thulium fractional laser, clear and brilliant laser, and Ultra Thulium laser are excellent options in our clinic. We also perform CO2 fractional and erbium depending on skin tone and tolerance for downtime. Patients do have to use a Melarase cream before and after treatment to help further reduce pigmentation after laser.  Melarase AM, Melarase PM, and Melapads can seriously improve surface sun damage and UV related pigmentation. Dark spots can improve with these treatments. I recommend fractional laser for incisional scars as well, especially after plastic surgery.

Hyperpigmentation can be quite frustrating. There are many different options for targeting pigment. I would start by seeing a dermatologist for an exact diagnosis of what you have. Then you can start treating your skin with some mild chemical peels to prep the skin for lasers or other treatments. If it is a true birthmark mark, most doctors will not recommend treating. Wearing a great sunscreen daily may help this not get darker as well.
