Are drains required for a simple explant without capsulectomy done under local anesthesia?

Is it possible to avoid seromas without using drains for this simple procedure? Does the surgeon need to use a special technique to prevent seromas? What is the likelihood of a seroma forming if drains are not used?

Drains often are not needed for straightforward implant removal.  The capsule could be closed to itself with sutures, or gently burned using a surgical electrical instrument to stimulate the tissues to heal to each other.  Nothing absolutely can prevent a seroma, even placement of temporary drains.

Thank you for your question. Most Plastic Surgeons place drains if they anticipate there will be oozing of fluid into the area, (typically blood/serum). With the procedure you describe, most may elect not to use drains. Please remember that every plastic surgeon may have a different protocol. Also it may depend on your individual circumstance. Drains are truly a preference of the physician. I do not use them as drains come with their own risks and complications post surgery.

I prefer to use drains to help keep the pocket closed and decrease the risk of a seroma. However, if no drains are used, should a seroma form, it can be still drained.

Drains are used to help prevent fluid collection after surgery and promote healing.  Each surgeon has her/his own preference with regard to use of drains.  It can also vary on a patient by patient basis.  If drains are used they typically are in place from only a few days to a couple of weeks.  I encourage you to discuss your concerns with your surgeon.
