Why is it that doctors in the Dominican republic have you wear a faja for months and the doctors in America do not?

Question

My doctor told me to wear my faja for 24 hour 3 months straight then 12 hours a day for three months straight. All my friends in America have never had to do this... just wondering the pros and cons .. also I haven't exactly been wearing it for 24 hours a day, some days I leave it off for a few hours or some nights I cant handle the compression and sleep with out it.

Hello and thanks for your question. As a plastic surgeon who performed all of his residency training in the United States, I also require that my patients wear their garments for a prolonged period of time. I have found that at minimum, 6 weeks of the garment worn 24/7 followed by an additional 6 weeks of nighttime use helps improve the results of high-volume liposuction and fat transfer. I would argue that my patient's who have had the best results have been those who have worn their garments for a total of 6 months for 12 hours a day or night. The garment helps mold the shape of your body and provides you with the hour-glass figure that is highly attractive.All the best,Dr. Z, Plastic Surgery

The inflammation process can last from 6 months to 1 year, each patient has an individual recovery process. The faja is recommended to help with the healing process and to provide a better result depending on your goals with the surgery.

Not all surgeons use garments.  I like patients to wear it for comfort and compression.  There is not strong evidence in the literature that supports its efficacy.

The main reason for prolonged faja use , is to keep swelling compressed until it subsides. Usually liposuction swelling takes form 12-16 weeks to disappear. Using the garment improves the shape outcome. Best ,
