Hello Doctors, I have been reading up on non-invasive fat loss solutions and came across Kybella that is generally used for chin and jawline treatments. I am curious .... can this be used for larger body areas like Back, Abdomen and buttocks etc. ? Would it be a very long and painful procedure ? Is the recovery too long. Will appreciate your valuable insight ...thanks so much regards

Answer: Is Kybella good for larger areas? Kybella was approved by the FDA to treat submental fat only. However, it can be used off label to dissolve fat in other areas, but I would not advise you to get Kybella treatment for large areas. It will be very costly and results will be at best suboptimal. Consider liposuction. It is the gold standard treatment to remove fat from large areas.

Answer: Liposuction is the gold standard for fat removal Kybella is FDA approved for the removal of chin fat only. My personal opinion is this is not a great treatment. The inflammatory response is dramatic and undesirable. Most people need to go through the process several times to get results. Occasionally the treatment is effective to the point where people look skeletonized and this is difficult to correct afterwards. It's based on making small aliquot injections. This seems to work reasonably well in the chin without making people look like the surface of a bag of marbles. Still, I question if you injected a small amount every inch on the abdomen if you wouldn't look a bit like a cobblestone street in Europe. The product is expensive to the point were even for each and the price of liposuction is competitive. To treat a full torso would probably cost $100,000 if someone needed three rounds. Liposuction his time proven, has always been and will continue to be the gold standard in fat removal. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
