Hello! Thank you for your question. It’s common for some patients to notice new lines or marks around the nasolabial folds and upper lip after rhinoplasty, especially when smiling. These lines can appear due to subtle changes in the nasal tip or columella support, scar tissue, or changes in skin tension after surgery. This can sometimes give a “plastic-y” appearance, even years after your procedure. The good news is that these changes are often treatable. Many patients benefit from soft tissue fillers, which can smooth dynamic lines and restore a more natural movement when smiling. Neurotoxin such as Botox or Dysport can also be utilized to limit contraction of the upper lip elevators. In some cases, a minor revision rhinoplasty or fat grafting may be recommended to adjust the nasal tip or restore volume if structural changes are contributing to the marks. An in-person examination is important to determine what would best correct this issue. Because the exact cause can vary from person to person, the best next step is to either see your original surgeon or seek out an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon. They can assess how your nose and surrounding tissues move and create a tailored plan to improve the appearance of these post-rhinoplasty lines while keeping results natural. I hope that answers your question. Best of luck! Justin Buro, M.D.
