I’m 31 years old & had a TT in 2014. Ive had 3 abd. surgeries. (C section x2 2012, 2017 & TT 2014) I’ve gained approx 35 lbs over the past 8 years and would like to be back at post surgery weight 135 lb. What exercises will be beneficial to me losing weight in my abdominal region after so many procedures? I’m willing to put in the work but don’t want to waste my time doing workouts that won’t help me with my goal. Thank you so much!
Answer: Weight loss after surgery Weight gain after surgery does occur. Weight gain during the initial recovery period is caused by fatty tissue but rather due to fluid retention and swelling as a part of the healing process. In some cases, patients experience weight gain as a side effect of the postoperative medication or being sedentary for a long time. The initial post-surgical weight gain is, in most cases, temporary and subsides as your body recovers. However, prolonged recovery time, physical inactivity, and changes in your eating behavior can lead to weight gain over time. The good news is that post-surgical weight loss responds well to dietary changes as well as exercise. For patients that qualify, there are medications that, together with diet and exercise and can help you reach your goal weight.

Answer: Effective Exercise and Dietary Strategies Post-Tummy Tuck Surgery Thank you for your question about which exercises are best to pursue after a tummy tuck and other abdominal surgeries. It's a pertinent question and I am glad to provide some guidance. When considering abdominal exercises post-surgery, it's crucial to determine whether your muscles were plicated during the tummy tuck. If your muscles were indeed plicated, focusing on sit-ups or rectus abdominis exercises may not yield significant benefits. However, if your rectus abdominis muscles were not plicated during your procedure, sit-ups and other core abdominal exercises could be advantageous for your overall strength. Now, concerning weight loss, I highly recommend incorporating intermittent fasting, a low-carb diet, and a low-sugar diet into your daily routine. This combination, paired with regular exercise, can aid significantly in achieving your weight loss goals. You may also want to consider seeking medical assistance or medication to accelerate your weight loss journey if you find it necessary. I hope this advice proves useful to you as you continue your post-surgery journey. Remember, it's essential to consult with your healthcare provider or a fitness professional before starting any new exercise routine to ensure safety and effectiveness. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: Exercise and fitness after tummy tuck Exercise after tummy tuck Hi there, Most likely your tummy tuck surgery helped improve the separation of muscles that can occur with weight fluctuation and pregnancies. I suspect that your muscles and core are quite strong based on your exercise experience. We performed a review study to investigate how tummy tuck improves core strength. Unfortunately the data is not conclusive and better studies will need to be performed to answer this question. We cannot definitively say that tummy tuck improves core strength, although we suspect that it does. Doing crunches or sit ups actually is not likely to improve your abdominal contour after tummy tuck if that contour is related to the volume of intra (inside your abdomen) abdominal fat. This is the metabolically most active fat of the body and the fat we all tend to gain and lose the quickest. It is also the fat associated with metabolic conditions as diabetes. Unfortunately if this fat is what is impacting your contour, only weight loss will improve it. No amount of crunches or cosmetic surgery can reach this fat. Crunches are still important for your fitness routine but not for weight loss. Cosmetic procedures can improve fat located between the skin and the abdominal wall. However this is important to discuss with your surgeon. Sometimes 10 lbs of weight loss is more impactful than a $10000 dollar surgery. Sometimes the surgery is going to get you to your goal after you lose the 10 lbs. Sometimes it is a combination. In terms of exercise for weight loss, it is best to discuss this with your doctor. In terms of insight, there is a common quote that you will hear at the gym that has some applicability here. "Abs are made in the kitchen". This quote points to the idea that fat accumulates when the input of calories exceeds what the body is using. It is impossible to target the fat of the abdomen with specific weight lifting maneuvers. In terms of calorie burning exercises: sustained exercises ie "cardio" versus high intensity training can be considered as a part of your routine. Finally your family doctor or endocrinologist can investigate whether or not you have a correctable medical condition that is impacting your weight loss journey.
