Can a crown placement cause ache from tooth to ear, when there was absolutely no pain before the crown was put in?

Usually symptoms such as ear ache relate to lower tooth, needing root canal in the lower jaw, although there could be multiple nerve intervention in area of back upper molar, called referred pain! Check with an experienced Endodontist, although you do not have any tooth symptoms, on that particular tooth, it might be from a lower tooth? might be due to many factors, or totally unrelated. It is wise also to visit an ENT physician. The occlusion or your bite must be checked for interference,and if you are a grinder or clencher, treatment might be recommended, and your symptoms should be monitored for each treatment to observe alleviation of your discomfort.

Did you ask your dentist about the pain from the temporary? As there is no pain from hot foods, that is a good sign meaning it is less likely to need a root canal. 
However, this type of pain is often caused because the crown is contacting early (what dentists call a premature contact). It can be fixed reality, but try not to take pain killers before you see your dentist again. If they still can not help, book in with a cosmetic dentist.

Dear Linda,Thank you for posting your question.  I am sorry to hear about the pain your experiencing after you had a crown placed.   From the information you provided it seems that you had an underlying bite issue that caused your tooth to chip. The chipped tooth is an indication that your bite is not aligned.  If the crown was made without taking that into consideration then pain in the tooth or jaw muscles is possible.
