Can I stop worrying about sun exposure 5 months post-op rhinoplasty?

Question

So, I’ve been TERRIFIED to go out to the sun because I really dont wanna get those dark spots on my nose. When I do have to go out, I always use sun cream, but I STILL feel very discomfort. I just dont wanna have to worry about it. It’s been 5 months, and I am wondering If I can FINALLY not worry about sun exposure and actually not have to wear sun cream? ITS MAKING ME SICK. Thank you.

Junior-Thanks for your question.  Without photos and knowing more specifics about your nose, skin type, gender, the surgery you had, etc - it is difficult to lend an opinion for you.  Your best option is to discuss you concerns with your surgeon.In general, though, I recommend patients minimize sun exposure after rhinoplasty because of the swelling that can result.  As you recall, nasal swelling is common after rhinoplasty and can last for months - even 12-18 months after surgery will see levels of swelling decrease.  If the nose is exposed to the sun and suffers a sun-burn, this swelling can be accentuated and the recovery prolonged.  Also, in the weeks following surgery, this can be especially concerning since the nasal skin is still recovering from surgery.At 5 months out, I don't suspect you are in jeopardy of damaging your surgery results.  However, sunscreen and wearing a hat is good practice at any time to minimize the impact of ultraviolet light on the aging of your skin and decrease your longterm risks of skin cancer.I hope this helps, but please confirm with your surgeon too.best wishes
