Thank you for your question. Generally speaking the two most common factors preventing a patients from clearing are: high BMIlow HCT BMI By far, the most limiting factor for getting the BBL is your BMI. This is a number which factors in your weight and your height. The higher the number, the more weight you carry for your given height. Above a certain BMI level, there are anesthesia and pulmonary risks with the surgery. Most all surgeons have a BMI criteria for elective surgery, but it does vary some from surgeon to surgeon. You can find BMI calculators on the internet easily, and your surgeon should be calculating this during your consultation anyways. In my practice, my BMI limit is 35. IF you are otherwise healthy. If you have diabetes, I would require a lower BMI. For the BBL procedure, I use IV sedation instead of General Anesthesia. With IV anesthesia you are breathing on your own, instead of a ventilator breathing for you. So much of the pulmonary risk is eliminated. For this reason I am comfortable with doing the BBL procedure on healthy patients with BMI of 35. low HCT level Outside of high BMI's, the most common factor we see is low HCT. This is a relatively inexpensive blood test that you can do at almost any walk in lab. Other than that, we do not have other common issues seen. Most patients are already aware if they have high blood pressure or diabetes. You can still have surgery, but you must be cleared and managed post operatively. In any event, you WILL need to have a complete physical prior to your procedure for clearance. But, at the very minimum you can at least check your BMI and HCT!
