When can I return to work after breast explant?

Question

I really want my implants out, however, I’m unable to get any time off work, without risking getting fired. I was wondering how soon I could be able to work again? I work a job that requires me standing up for 8 hours.

Depending on where the implants are placed and your ability to manage pain, it is possible to undergo explant under local anesthesia in the office.  It can be done on a Friday and you can be at work on Monday.  However, explant alone frequently results in patient dissatisfaction due to hanging skin.  A lift is more invasive and takes longer to heal.  I have done patients on Friday and return to work on Monday after explant and lift.Best Wishes,Gary Horndeski, M.D.

If only explantation is performed without lift or capsule alteration, the recovery should be speedy as the incision used to implant is used to explant without any pocket dissection.  There will always be a small risk of hematoma, fluid collection, or infection, but this is a much easier recovery than placing implants.  Most patients return to work within a week and only experience minimal discomfort.

Dear whocarsssss,The majority of implant removal patients need a few days of downtime. Depending on the work environment (heavy lifting, etc) more time off may be necessary. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after surgery to avoid blood clots in the legs. I suggest that you follow your plastic surgeon’s post-operative instructions, especially on the level of activity that you can do and your scheduled follow up checkups, for faster and recovery.Daniel Barrett, MD

Many patients are able to return to work within a week of having their implants out.  You will likely have some activity restrictions in order to prevent fluid collection.  Pain is often reported to be minimal for this procedure.  The recovery will be somewhat more involved if a lift is performed as well.
