Could I fracture my implant from trauma?

Question

I have tooth #8 implant done 1 yr and 4 months ago. It is very stable and i dont have any problems with it. Few days ago, i was hanging up my pants with a belt when the metal buckle swung and hit my implant tooth! It didnt hurt or bleed but the next morning I saw some blood in between implant tooth and #7. Right now i am having very mild discomfort. Do u think I could have fractured my implant? It doesnt wiggle right now nor it shifted.

the implant screw itself is made of titanium and it's very strong. your bone will probably fracture before the implant itself does. but the crown that's sitting on top and the attachments to the implant can break in trauma. if you are having discomfort you should have it checked for sure.

Although it is not common, it is possible to fracture an implant. It is more common to fracture the screw that attaches the abutment to the implant, especially if it has become partially unscrewed. From your description of the trauma you experienced, it doesn't sound like anything fractured. Since you do not feel that anything is mobile and you are not experiencing any discomfort, it sounds more like you injured your gums and simply have  soft tissue trauma. So that you have piece if mind, you should visit your dentist and have your implant examined and have an X-ray taken. I hope oped you found this information helpful,Dr Champagne

It is possible to traumatize the implant. Avoid using the tooth for some time and get it followed up with a check up. An xray may be taken to ensure no bone damage.  No pain may indicate its just fine.
