Purple Eyelids After Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

Question

Three and a half weeks after upper and lower eyelid surgery my upper lids are still deep purple with very visible thread veins. Do you think these will disappear? My surgeon does not seem very concerned.

We are at a bit of a disadvantage as you did not enclose a photo.  Also we don't know what happened in the surgery.  Did you have bleeding, hypertension, or ingestion of blood thinning items? ,(i.e.; ibuprofen, aspirin, vit. A, vit E, ginkgo, etc;).   All that said, patients can have bruising and bleeding for weeks after this type of surgery.  If you did not have these skin issues before surgery, they should eventually fade.  Always best to speak with your plastic surgeon and let him know your concerns.

Bruising is expected after eyelid surgery and it usually resolves after 7 to 10 days.  Persistent bruising and discoloration of the soft tissues can occur.  There is really no magic cure as this will ultimately resolve on its own.  Occasionally alternating warm and cool compresses can help as well as on over the counter herbal product, Bromelean.  The usual antibruising dose is 500 mg twice a day between meals.

Blepharoplasty should not change the skin tone and texture so if you&rsquo;re having purplish eyelids that you didn&rsquo;t have before they should return to your normal skin tone & texture after the bruising and swelling goes away. Sometimes this can take months particularly if you are predisposed to swelling of the lids.
