Puffiness at Ends of Incision. Are They Dog Ears? Will They Flatten? (photo)

I went in for a mole removal two days ago with a facial plastic surgeon. It was excised in an elliptical shape. The first few hours the excision appeared level but now there is puffiness at both ends of the excision. Are these dog ears, or just swelling or fluid trapped? Will they flatten over time?

After a shave biopsy, it is important to keep the area moist with bacitracin for a few days and then Vaseline for another few days.  You do not want the area to scab over as this will certainly prevent the area from healing as best as it can.

Thank you for your question. Serial excision and tissue expansion is appropriate for a large defect for an aesthetically pleasing result. I would recommend consulting with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for safest and best treatment option. I hope this helps.

The white remnant dermis is normal and the wound will continue to heal over the next week. Avoid pigmentation of the scar by avoiding the sun and applying Melarase cream twice daily.

I would recommend that you consider a shave excision for the mole on your nostril.  The procedure can be done within a few minutes.
