What is the Best Way to Care After Getting a Mole Shaved from my Face (Side of Nose)? To Minimize a Scar

After a shave biopsy, it is important to keep the area moist with bacitracin for a few days and then Vaseline for another few days.  You do not want the area to scab over as this will certainly prevent the area from healing as best as it can.

Shave biopsy of the lesion dissects through superficial dermis only and heals by primary epithelisation without suturing. Cautery or chemical coagulation used to stop bleeding. Scar normally round with initial discoloration which becomes skin color later. Silicone gel application like Kelo-cote is useful but needs to be used for at least 2-3 months.

Extensive studies of wound healing in animal testing has shown that keeping an excision site "moist" will help promote healing and minimize scarring. Therefore letting a wound become dry and scabby would be detrimental to healing. There are no other magic ingredients to minimize scarring although lots of money is spent on products that do little more than keeping the area moist. I instruct all of my patients to apply petroleum jelly after a surgical procedure. Aquaphor is also a great product and worth the few dollars more. Antibiotic ointments and expensive healing serums are unnecessary and a waste of money.
