What type of anesthesia is generally used for an older patient seeking an eye lift?

Elderly mother seeking an eye lift. Uppers are obvious but perhaps more congruence if adding the lowers. Can both be done under local/IV sedation? Is there an average cost in the Portland metro area? Thanks

I normally perform upper and/or lower eyelid surgery using local anesthesia with IV sedation.  The type of anesthesia used is really dependent on the surgeon though.

Hello @Magical443550, thank you for your question. The use of general anesthesia by parenteral route may be indicated depending on the results of the analytical tests. In our practice, we perform upper eyelid surgery under local anesthesia, however lower eyelid surgery requires general anesthesia, since it would be very painful to remove the fat bags without being asleep. There's minimal pain and discomfort after the surgery. Anticipate two weeks of visible bruising and swelling. Our current price list is located on our website

Upper blepharoplasty has always been a procedure that could be done in the office under local anesthesia without conscious sedation and, if desired,  just mild anxiolysis. The way we used to do lower blepharoplasty required an accredited facility and general or conscious sedative anesthesia. With better understanding of the aging of the area and newer methods, lower blepharoplasty can also be done in the office under local anesthesia with or without a mild anxiolytic if desired.
