Does a rhinoplasty to get a lower nose bridge sometimes result in ending up with epicanthic folds? (photo)

Hi! I was just curious. I’ve been looking into getting a rhinoplasty, because I’m mixed race (South Asian, East Asian, white) and my nose ended up being a strange combination. I also have a deviated septum. The front of my nose is very rounded and soft, but my nose bridge has a bump that looks extremely out of place. When I was a baby, I had slight epicanthic folds. Now I have slightly hooded eyes, but no folds. Would lowering my nose bridge also somehow bring the epicanthic folds back?

Hi -  Changing the dorsum (nasal bridge) whether you are bringing it down to be smooth or with a slight slope, it should not affect the medial webs of the eyes. When you reduce a hump during rhinoplasty it can give the illusion that the nose is longer, but if you don't undergo a blepharoplasty, this will not bring your epicanthal folds back.

Generally speaking, rhinoplasty surgery does not lead to a change in somebody's eyelid appearance. Our happiest candidates for rhinoplasty surgery are those people who have severe dissatisfaction with their nasal appearances for a long. Of time. I hope this helps! Sincerely, Dr Joseph

Hello and thank you for your question. Lowering your dorsal hump will not cause epicanthal folds. Based on your photographs, you may benefit from a tip refining rhinoplasty. Your surgeon can accomplish this by trimming, suturing, and reshaping the cartilage in your lower nose. Fascial grafts may also be used to help improve tip refinement. Dorsal hunp reduction can also be performed at the same time. With good surgical technique, you could have an outstanding result. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified rhinoplasty surgeon who can evaluate you in person.

I have never had epicanthal gold  appear after rhinoplasty that were not there previously. One key to getting a good result is narrowing the bridge sufficiently to avoid that

Lowering the bridge of the nose, particularly between the eyes, can result in extra skin present, which can lead to possible epicanthic folds. Your photographs are somewhat limited but you may benefit from simply a rhinoplasty without lowering it and just getting the dorsum straighter and perhaps the tip more defined with a slightly more upper rotation.

No, a rhinoplasty procedure does not result in epicanthal folds. A closed rhinoplasty can accomplish shaving down the dorsal hump, narrowing the bridge line, and refining the nasal tip with all the incisions placed on the inside of the nose. Your eyelids will remain the same.
