Can lipo slow your metabolism? 10 days post-op - don't feel hungry.

To be sure, all of the effects of liposuction on lipid metabolism have not been worked out, although there is some data to suggest improvement in lipid metabolism in diabetic patients.  There is no evidence that there is a physiologic improvement in the body's ability to lose weight following liposuction.   Loss of appetite after surgery is possibly due to lack of physical activity.  I recommend a balanced diet with a series of protein shakes, but once again your surgeon should be providing you with this information as advice will differ.  Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

It is not uncommon to have a temporary change in appetite after extensive surgery.  This is likely what you are experiencing.  Continue to follow the advice of your surgeon and be sure to make your meals balanced when you are hungry.

I have never heard of anything like that and believe that you are just experiencing a lag in metabolism that accompanies any large procedure. I always tell my patients to drink a lot of keep hydrated, but eat when you get hungry unless it becomes a chronic issue.Talmage Raine MD
