Hello, I have a mitral valve prolapse which requires me to get routing thoracic echocardiograms. Would breast implants interfere with that imaging or prevent a good reading? Do saline or silicone implants affect the imaging more? A cardiac ultrasound is really the only test to monitor my MVP so I'm concerned about implants preventing me from having a good scan. Thanks so much!

Hello!  Thank you for the question!  While echocardiograms would be performed atop your sternal area as opposed to the breast itself, the implants should make no impact on the ability for such imaging. The implant also could be displaced if it does encroach on the field. Discuss this with your cardiologist and plastic surgeon. If however, you still have any reservation, certainly refrain from proceeding with the augmentation. Best wishes.

Thanks so much for your question. I don’t think you have much to worry about in terms of cardiac  monitoring for my mitral valve prolapse falling breast augmentation. To my knowledge the two are separate and should not interfere in anyway with one another.  The only issue would be to make sure you get adequate anabiotic coverage prior to the implant being placed.

That very question, do breast implants interfere with echocardiograms, has been studied previously. Those results from ten years ago shows that silicone implants do create some ultrasound beam interference and may impede completely accurate readings. However with improved echocardiogram technology that issue may be less relevant today. This is a very good question for your cardiologist.
