30-32 units of Botox for frown lines?

"​For glabellar lines (or frown lines / ""11"" lines), we inject Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport into the muscle, causing the muscle to weaken and improving the appearance of the lines. These work by binding to receptors that send nerve signals for muscles to contract. Since your body makes new receptors and neurotransmitters all the time, it needs to be maintained otherwise the wrinkles will slowly return as the muscle regains function over time. Neurotoxins take 2 to 4 weeks to start working and lasts for up to 6 months.

For deeper glabella lines or strong 11s, I use a combination of Botox with fillers, lasers and microneedling with PRP. I suggest getting a formal evaluation with an experienced cosmetic dermatologist and expert in lasers and fillers. Best, Dr. Emer

As you know Botulinum toxin relaxes muscles that you use to frown. Its effect is dose dependent. If your muscles are big or if you use them a lot, you might be better off with a higher dose. In my practice I suggest a dose that I think is likely to work given the size and strength of the patients muscle. I'm not always right. Typically in  women I would use 20 - 30 units for the Glabella. If its the first time you've come to see me I would use 20U to start then have you come back in 2 weeks to see if it was enough. Its not really a science, we just want to get the best result for each patient.

There is not only a different number of units that I might use for different patients based on their anatomy  and size of the muscles which make the frown creases, but the exact insertion sites vary from patient to patient. My range for women in the glabella of the forehead has been from as low as 9 units (uncommon) to 35 units (not so common). Most women seem to get 20 to 25 units in my practice.

Thank you for your question. My typical starting dose of Botox on the Glabella is 20 units. However, if a patient has more muscle mass, I may start as high as 30 units. It is generally a good idea to schedule a follow-up appointment 2 weeks out to assess the results of the injections. It depends on the area being injected. I would say that most adult faces need 40-60 units. Starting off with 32u sounds reasonable assuming the area is correct.

Thank you for your question.  It's difficult to make exact recommendations without assessing you in-person, or at least reviewing your photos.  Do you know if your doctor was recommending 30-32 units for just the glabella (the vertical frown lines between the brows) or was he also recommending treatment to the forehead and other areas as well?  For most female patients, I often start with doses of 16-20 units in the glabella.  That said, I often also recommend treating the forehead at the same time for most patients for a more balanced look, in which case you would need a higher overall dose.  I would recommend consulting with a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon.  Best of luck!

The standard dose for treatment of the glabellar complex is 20 units.  I have used more but mostly in men with strong muscles in the area.  Make sure you are seeing a board certified dermatologist

Every person's face is different and there are no "rules" in plastic surgery.  You did not include any photos so its very difficult to give you a definitive answer.  20-40 units is totally reasonable in the frown lines, but that totally depends on the patient's age, gender, anatomy, genetics, and how they have aged.  If you have very faint wrinkles as you mentioned, it is totally reasonable to start with a minimal treatment and see how you like it! I do this with many of my younger patients. As others here suggested, you can always return for additional touch-up treatments. There are many people using Botox, but few plastic surgical artists. Do not look for "deals" or "discounts."  Make sure your Botox provider is a board-certified, fellowship-trained MD, Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon, Facial Plastic Surgeon, Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist -- id stay away from non-doctor injectors or doctors who were not trained in Plastic Surgery fields.

It is hard to say what is the appropriate dosing without seeing you. In a male, dosing is almost always higher than in a female. I treat females 15-30 to the glabella and males are 20-50 units or more. If you get "too much", there should be no side effects and the results should last you longer. For example, you might get improvement with just 20 units but there might be more movement than you were expecting and the duration might only be 2 months. If you were to get 32, you might get less movement and the duration would be closer to 3 months. As you can see, there is no "right" answer. People desire different results and sometimes what a patient can afford affects the dosing decision as well.

I agree with John. Starting at 20 is fine and moving up. It is important to know that how much each patient needs is individual. Guidelines for each area are based on averages. You may need more or less and that is always a work in progress
