Can Dutasteride cause hair loss? (Photos)

Question

I’m a 22 y/o male who has taken Fin & Minox for 2 yrs. Recently I switched to Dutasteride off label for MPB & still using Minox 2x/day I’ve been reading reports of Dut actually causing hair loss especially along hair line. Is this possible & are these claims valid? MPB has had a significant impact on my self confidence. The emotional toll may be worth the cost. Are hair transplants performed on guys in their 20s? My concern is widows peak/receded temples.

In  my opinion, you should have a hair loss expert manage your medications. You need blood work to evaluate your DHT and testosterone levels. Dutasteride can raise the blood level of testosterone, however since it is a potent Blocker in the follicle, this  alone should not make a difference. Most likely you are seeing a change in your androgenic pattern or scalp maturation.

Dutasteride theoretically has more potency for hair preservation than Finasteride but a higher side effect profile as well.  The use of dutasteride for hair loss is an off-label use according to the FDA.  Typically regrowth of both agents occurs in areas where the hair is miniaturized and not where slick baldness occurs.  Consider the use of regenerative techniques such as PRP and others and the use of nutraceuticals such as Nutrafol which have a much better side effect profile.  Best Dr. Anil Shah

When it comes to these questions of a dual DHT inhibitor such as Dutasteride, I can only suggest you sit down with a qualified hair specialist. Finasteride is usually the first line and Dutasteride is a much harsher drug when dealing with side effects. So you need to take this offline to a professional.

Dutasteride is not approved for safety and effectiveness for hair loss by the FDA. I doubt it is causing your hair loss
