Would Botox injections for the hands be ok for a 14 yr old?

My teenage daughter suffers from sweaty hands and she is very self conscious. Have tried prescription topicals to no avail. Would this be a safe next step?

Botox is effective in treating excessive sweating of the palms and usually lasts anywhere from 4 - 6 months. I recommend seeing a board certified plastic surgeon for an evaluation.

There is no contraindication of age for Botox in the palms; Botox is regularly used in children for other medical reasons in quite large doses. The only question is how motivated is the child to have the treatment because topical anesthesia does not work well on the hands. I do not believe that this would be a problem.However, it should be noted that it involves multiple injections with small needles into the palms which can be painful. Topical anaesthetics should be used.

Botox is an excellent treatment option for certain subtypes of sweating (hyperhidrosis). Although it works most effectively for sweaty armpits, it can also be utilized on the palms. Your dermatologist might be willing to inject your daughter with botox - although treatments are uncomfortable they are tolerable. Discomfort can be diminished with a variety of techniques including using icing, liquid nitrogen cryotherapy or even vibration-based devices. Occasionally muscle weakness can develop, but luckily it's not permeant and in general still considered a very rare side-effect.

Your daughter might get some great benefit from Botox for sweating. She will need to be mature enough to allow several small needle pricks in her hands. Topical numbing can be applied first to help minimize the discomfort. I would suggest taking your daughter to a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist and discussing all the options.

Generally Botox is not used under 18; however, this is a medical problem and can be helped tremendously and i would not hesitate to use it in this instance.  It is somewhat painful but this can be overcome and there are few side-effects.

There are several treatment options for excessive sweating of the palms or palmar hyperhidrosis.  Botox is one option which can work well.  The downside to Botox in the palms is that it can create some temporary muscle weakness in the hand.  This can be more problematic for some people such as a piano player who might need the most precise control of the fingers.  The other issue to consider with Botox injections into the palm is pain control.  The injections are done with a tiny needle but the palm is very sensitive.  It helps a great deal to use forced air cooling to blow ice-cold air at the skin during the injections.Another treatment option that you may want to look into is iontopheresis.  Look into a company called Fischer which makes these units.  Another option would be an oral medicine called Robinul which has worked well for many of my patients.  I suggest you find an experienced dermatologist to discuss these treatment options and determine which would be the best fit for your daughter.
