20 year old breast implants causing pain

Question

After having my mammogram the doctor informed me that there was a spot that needed a ultrasound on my left breast. During the test when the scanner went over my nipple I felt a static electric shock. Test concluded that there was no cyst. The test was done May 2022. I have been having breast pain that's getting worse. Before my mammogram I lost 30 pounds and one night out of nowhere I felt like something shifted in my breast. Help!

Thank you for your question. First of all, I don’t recommend my patients to get mammograms after their breast implant surgery. I recommend  them to get yearly ultrasound instead of a mammogram. The reason being is that he majority of problems reported were for breast implant rupture that was suspected to occur during mammography. Rupture during mammography was reported for both silicone gel-filled and saline-filled breast implants. 
Also, implants make it harder to see the entirety of your breast tissue on a mammogram, potentially obscuring findings as well. 
I would like to add that most silicone and saline implants are FDA approved for 10 years. It’s recommended to replace your implants after 10 years. However, most patients tend to keep them longer. Best wishes.

A complete workup needs to be conducted by a board-certified plastic surgeon who may be able to determine if the pain is related to the implant. It may not be. The patient should be examined for all possible implant related complications and imaging can be used to supplement the findings.

The mammogram may have torn some of your capsule, hence the burning pain. It should slowly heal. If it continues, please see your plastic surgeon.  Lossing weight will also decrease the amount of breast tissue you have and make the implant more noticeable.

Without a consultation and examination of your breasts, it is quite difficult to speculate what is troubling you now with your implants.  I would strongly recommend that you visit your plastic surgeon to discuss these changes and your breast pain. You also might make sure that he (she) is sent a copy of the mammograms and ultrasound reports.
