Is it bad to begin massaging breasts 2-3 days after breast augmentation?

I had a breast augmentation done on january 21, 2015. I received 500ccs in both breast (mentor implants, high profile). I begin massaging my breast two days after surgery because I was not in a lot of pain. Will this negatively effect the overall appearance of my breast in any way?

It is entirely possible that massaging your breasts before 1 week can cause bleeding which might need surgery and result in a long term complication in the way of capsular contracture.

Each surgeon has their own individual  post-op protocol that they like. I
 would stick with what your surgeon recommends. If you do not follow 
their protocol and a problem arises,  the surgeon most likely blame the 
cause of the problem, on not following their directions.Every surgeon has a protocol that they feel will give optimal results, ask them for their reasons, they will be glad to share. For smooth implants, massage can be carefully done early after surgery. Important to check with your surgeon as to what he thinks is best. Some pocket creations have sutures that should not be stressed by early massage.

Thanks for your question. It really depends on what type of breast implant you have.  If you have textured implants then typically you do not want to massage at all.  Textured "anatomic" or tear drop implants are the ones that really should not be massaged because it can cause rotation.  If you have smooth, round breast implants (saline or silicone gel) and under the muscle which it sounds like may have, then I do not see any problem with massaging at 2-3 days after the procedure.  This is the time period when I start recommending to my patients to begin gentle massaging (implant displacement exercises) after the procedure. I would check with your plastic surgeon to make sure. Hello! Thank you for your question. It is important to follow the post surgery instructions that your plastic surgeon has given you after surgery. It is best not to do massage if it has not been indicated so soon after surgery. I think massaging the breasts only 2 days after surgery is too soon. It is best to ask your surgeon and when you should massage your breasts. I feel that when patients do things such as massaging the breasts without prior instruction from their surgeon and cause unnecessary complications. When in doubt, check with your PS.

Some implants do not require massage.  You should discuss those post op maneuvers with your plastic surgeon.At any rate - massage two days after surgery seems too aggressive and could lead to disruption of the incision or bleeding.  Creating more bleeding will negate any positive effect of the massage.Talk with your PS.  He/she will guide you in the right direction.I hope this helps.

You will find that different plastic surgeons have different opinions about the utility of massage ( and timing to begin massage, if they recommend it all). Timing of starting breast implant massage depends on multiple factors related to your surgery.  You should always let your own surgeon guide you in this regard and not depend on internet opinions.

If you have smooth (not textured) breast implants it should help not hurt. However you must clear this with your operating surgeon who is familiar with your operation.
