Question

How long do you have to wait before you can increase sodium intake after getting buccal fat pad removal? I have a cruise coming up April 7th and I want to be able to eat normal food without sodium swelling up my face. My face was going down then I ate sodium and then it kinda swole up after eating sodium... my dr said to only eat no more than 150 mg every meal.... I'm in week 2 now almost! I got the procedure done March 8th 2019

Great question!  Although every surgeon may have preferences when it comes to postoperative care, I generally have patients resume a regular diet right away, as long as its not hard (chips, nuts) or too spicy.  I generally give all my patients a steroid pack to help decrease the swelling.  You should as your surgeon to see what he/she thinks.

Diet restrictions after buccal fat removal depends on the surgeon's preference and advice to his/her patients. In my practice, my patients do no require to have a low sodium diet post-operatively. They just need to avoid hot temperature food like hot coffee, hot tea, hot soup, etc., during the time the mouth is numb due to the local anesthesia (approximately 12-24h). Patients with diet restrictions after surgery should ask their surgeon when it is safe and ok to resume normal diet.
