What can I do about the lumps from Bellafill in my temple area? (photos)

We are specialists in the removal of Artefill from the face and body. Inflammatory mediators can wreak havoc on permanent fillers, causing swelling and pain. Early removal is key. I would use SwellX to reduce swelling, if possible.

Bruising and/or lumpiness can be typical after hitting a vein with an injection. It can last 1-2 weeks. In the mean time, VBeam treatments can give improvement. Keep in mind, it can take several months for final results with Bellafill. You may need more than one treatment to get the final outcome as bellafill builds collagen over the long term. The temples should only be injected with cannulas in the plane just superficial to the deep temporal fascia and below the vessels to avoid bruising. If needles are used (not advised), it should be in the supraperiosteal plane. It might be possible to massage the area vigorously to smooth things out. The final result takes months to appreciate and I would not be aggressive with any other treatment until then. If there are lumps at that point, further injections might be able to hide the lumps and could be done with an HA filler. If the lumps can't be hidden with further filler, excision or injections with 5FU might be helpful. 

Thank you for sharing your photos and your concerns.  The good news is the bruising will resolve in 2-4 weeks for most patients.  You can accelerate the resolution of the bruising with a pulse dye laser or Max G handpiece from the ICON.  I am sorry to hear of the nodules.  Most expert injectors never utilize Bellafill in the temples due to the risk of immediate and long term nodules.  In the past, we used to surgically remove these nodules.  A nonsurgical option is to use a combination of flurouracil, Kenalog 10 mg, and hyaluronidase.  Please see an expert cosmetic dermatologist or cosmetic plastic surgeon who is experienced in treating Bellafill / Artefill complications. Best of luck,Suneel Chilukuri, M.D. Houston, Texas (Facebook -- @RefreshDermatology)

Thanks for posting pictures.  The bruising will resolve with time: I also recommend topical Arnica Montana, an herbal that helps with bruising. Try massaging the site. If the nodules persist beyond a few weeks, I do recommend seeing a healthcare provider. There is no agent to dissolve Bellafill, but injectable steroids and 5-FU are useful if the nodules persist from inflammation. We often start with a biopsy.

You can have bumps and lumps from any filler for up to 3 months after an injection.  Usually this is not the filler but simply the swelling and bruising that can happen with any facial trauma (which an injection is).  I tell all of my patients to expect what you are going through.  Swelling will last 3 to 10 days.  Bruising will last 10 to 21 days.  Lumps will last 8 to 12 weeks.

Be patient, this will all settle in time.  Sometimes gentle massage of the area will help to break these lumps faster.
