How do we find out if our implants were part of the recall that just came out?

Potentially the hospital or surgery center where your surgeon operated has records or if another surgeon took over the practice would have maintained them.  Without any implant information, it would be hard to know what type of implants you have.  If you feel like something is wrong with your implants, you should be evaluated by a board certified plastic surgeon.Dr. Eric J. The recall of Allergan Biocell textured implants applies to implants that are on the shelf.      There is not a recommendation that women who have had these implants placed explant them.   If you believe that you have Allergan implants, you can contact the company to see if and what implants may have been registered by your surgeon.      If your surgery was at a hospital or surgery center, they should also have an implant record.      

My practice documents in each patient record the implant manufacturer name, number of CCs, date of implant insertion, and serial number. This information is used should an implant require removal and replacement.  The staff at the plastic surgeon's office that acquired the former practice your PS was associated with should be able to give you a copy of this information.
However, records are generally archived for seven years from the date of surgery, but this policy may vary from surgeon to surgeon.   

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  I would see if any surgeons took over the practice of yours and maintained your relevant paperwork.  Additionally the implant card you should have received from him/her should have the information as to whether it was an Allergan/Natrelle implant and if it was textured. The short answer is any textured Allergan device (implant or expander). Below is the content of the press release from Allergan:"Allergan today announced a voluntary worldwide recall of BIOCELL® textured breast implants and tissue expanders. Allergan is taking this action as a precaution following notification of recently updated global safety information concerning the uncommon incidence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
BIOCELL® saline-filled and silicone-filled textured breast implants and tissue expanders will no longer be distributed or sold in any market where they are currently available. Effective immediately, healthcare providers should no longer implant new BIOCELL® textured breast implants and tissue expanders and unused products should be returned to Allergan. Allergan will provide additional information to customers about how to return unused products.
Patient safety is a priority for Allergan. Patients are advised to speak with their plastic surgeon about the risks and benefits of their implant type should they have any concerns.
Importantly, the FDA and other health authorities have not recommended removal or replacement of textured breast implants or tissue expanders in asymptomatic patients. 
This global recall does not affect Allergan's NATRELLE® smooth or MICROCELL® breast implants and tissue expanders.

No, the company will not be able to reach out to you since they do not have a list of names of all patients who received their implants, nor have current addresses. If your surgery was in a surgery center or hospital, you could contact the medical records department for a copy of your operative report. Perhaps another surgeon took over the practiced of your retired surgeon, and you could contact his/her office. You might also look through your records and see if you still have the original information about your implants. I always gave my patients the specific information about their implants (company name, size, style, volume, serial number and lot number, etc.) so they would have this if needed.

The recall applies to textured implants and expanders manufactured by Allergan.  The facility where you had your surgery may have records showing the type you have.  In addition you may have received an implant card from your surgeon with the implant details on it.  If you are having issues with your implants I encourage you to visit with a board certified plastic surgeon near you.

Hello! Thank you for your question. Your concerns are shared by many patients. Since you have already decided to have your breast implants removed, then you can find out the brand, size, and other characteristics of the implant at the time of surgery. If you weren't already going to have your breast implants removed, then the answer would be based on the FDA's recommendations: if you don't have any symptoms or unusual physical exam findings, the FDA currently recommends against removal of your breast implants (even if you don't know the identity of the implants). As to your question about the breats implant manufacturers, they are not currently reaching out to patients. I hope this answers your questions. Best of luck!

If you are having problems with your implants,  consult with a plastic surgeon(s) with experience in explantation of breast implants.For implant information, the card that your original plastic surgeon gave you at the time of surgery, will have your implant information on it.  You can also contact the facility where you had your surgery to find the information.  You may want to seek a consultation with a plastic surgeon who can advise you about explantation surgery and options.  S/he may be able to find information from the implant manufacturer if you cannot find your card but s/he will need to contact them.  I hope this helps.
