How long until bump on nose bridge will go away? (Photo)

Question

I got punched on my nose bridge a little more than a month ago on 11/27/15. I was wondering if my bump will go down any more. When I got hit, it only hurt for millisecond and then there was a mild pain for half an hour. No headache or blood. I don't think I broke my nose and when I touch it it doesn't hurt. I really want it to go all the way down. It looks bigger or smaller depending on the angle. My mom says it will go down with time. Will massaging the nose also help? Thanks in advance.

Hello and thank you for your question and photographs. It is very normal to be swollen after nasal trauma.  Nasal swelling can sometimes take 6-12 months to fully resolve. However, you may have sustained a nasal/septal fracture even without experiencing pain.   I recommend that you seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate you in person.Best wishes and good luck

The nose stays swollen for a longer period of time than other parts of the body. I would recommend waiting at least two months, and if the bump is still there, you will likely need to have it surgically corrected. Call a rhinoplasty surgeon in your area if you are still unhappy with the appearance. Best of luck

Trauma to the nose can create a fracture of the nose which can be displaced, or non-displaced. An x-ray and  and in-person examination performed on the nose will determine that. In addition, trauma to the nose can create a fracture of the septum which is called a deviated nasal septum. The upper lateral cartilages on each side of the nose can also become fractured and dislocated off of the nasal bones. If the result of the trauma is permanent after a few months, a rhinoplasty may be required to straighten the nose and shave down the dorsal hump.

It may go away with time........It may not go away with time...........Only time will tell.Traumatic bumps on noses are very common and I have seen many persist even though there is no clinical bone fracture. This is probably due to a small hematoma and subsequent scar formation. Ice in the immediate injury period can help.....thereafter massage and taping of the area might help....... but no guarentees. If it persists and it bothers you a simple rasping of the site will remove it. I do this with oral sedation and local anesthesia in my office operating room in 20 minutes.
