Would you be able to get a tummy tuck & lipo if you were born with gastroschisis? (Photo)

Question

I was born with Gastroschisis (my intestines outside of my stomach) and I am wondering after 2 pregnancies back to back taking a huge toll on my body if I would be able to get a tummy tuck & some lipo? I'm curious as to whether I am able to because I have a makeshift kind of belly button from the doctors stitching it together after putting my intestines back inside and I know that when most people get tummy tucks the doctor moves their belly button *inserting pics of my stomach and belly button*

Thank you for your question.  I have seen many patients with histories of abdominal surgeries, abdominal trauma, and congenital defects who have successfully undergone abdominoplasty.  Your belly button will remain in the same position, with your skin re-draped over your belly button.  I would anticipate a significant improvement in your upper and lower abdominal contour. That’s a great question and one that each surgeon would have to answer for themselves. A physical exam could help tell if you have any residual abdominal hernia in which case I would not perform the surgery.. too risky.

You don't have a "usual" situation, but you may indeed be a good candidate for abdominoplasty.  First, make sure that you have optimized your weight loss and are in good health.  Then, go for a couple of in-person consultations with reputable plastic surgeons and see what they have to say.  In your situation, it really will require an in-person evaluation.  Good luck!

Generally as long as you are in good health you should be fine to undergo abdominoplasty with a history of gastroschisis.  The belly button will likely have some issues with blood supply and your surgeon should plan on reconstructing it at the time of surgery.   Seek out a board certified, experienced plastic surgeon with lots of experience in your area
