Is it better to remove implants through the areola which is my original scar, or underneath the breast?

For implants that have been in for several years, I would recommend removing the capsule with the implant.  This is better performed through an incision in your breast fold.  

Either way will likely "work". In my practice, I lean towards the use of a inframammary incision for breast implant removal surgery.  This approach may help to minimize risk of nipple/areola "depression" (breast contour problems) once breast implants are removed.
