18 days post-op and my face is still severely swollen, even after Prednisone. Is this normal? (photo)

Hi I had my rhinoplasty done 18 days ago I knew there would be swelling but my cheeks and top lip are still heavily swollen aswell as my forehead along with minor headaches every now and then. I’ve been to my GP and he’s put me on prednisolone for the last 3 days and nothing has changed! Is this normal? I can barely move my top lip and I’m pretty scared. My skin has also heavily broken out into what seems to be the worst acne I’ve had. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you

Hello Jadie,Great question. Congratulations on your rhinoplasty. However, you are still very early in your recovery process. This procedure involves the manipulation of the nasal bones and nasal cartilage, which then leads to an abundance of swelling. The swelling causes your nose to look abnormal. It also misguides the results of your procedure. It takes a few months to one year for all the swelling to go down. Until then we can examine your final results. If concerns persist, please consult with a board certified plastic surgeon for a detailed examination.

It is totally normal to be concerned about your recovery, but 18 days is still very early in a Rhinoplasty Surgeon's mind. I am sure that your Surgeon has told you this, but it is a fact.  The breakout on your skin is most likely related to adhesives used for a splint/ taping around the time of surgery and will resolve. Please stay in close contact with your Surgeon for the reassurance that you need.

18 days still a pretty short time for your inflammation  to go away completely even with prednisone, remember that after your inflammation is gone you might hit your optimal result within a year post op
