I am getting organized for breast augmentation but I am concerned about both my performance as an extreme whitewater kayaker, needing strength around my pectorals, and capsular contracture. Where do you suggest placing the implants?

Answer: Breast Implants & Sports Hi, thank you for your question. A dual plane (partially under the muscle) may be a good option for you. Many surgeons tend to place breast implants under the muscle in order to reduce the risk of capsular contracture, however, it involves releasing some of the muscle attachments. This will likely not impact your ability to kayak, but will require 8 full weeks of restraint from sports. Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon who can explain the procedure in detail after an in-person exam. I hope this helps. Best of luck!

Answer: Can I have implants under the muscle if I am an extreme sports athlete? Hello, thank you for your question. Sub-muscular (dual plane) is a better choice for a number of reasons including reduced risk of capsular contracture, better longevity, and greater implant coverage. There will be some level of animation deformity with sub-muscular placement but the goal is to minimize it to the extent possible. Very few breast augmentation patients have enough breast tissue to permit a sub-glandular augmentation. As a bodybuilder, I perform breast augmentation in fitness and bodybuilding patients who opt for silicone breast implants and have very large or strong chest muscles. More cleavage can be created because the implants can be placed slightly closer together. Schedule an email, Skype or in-person consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon for proper evaluation

Answer: Can I have implants under the muscle if I am an extreme sports athlete? Yes, you can have implants placed under the muscle and still enjoy your active lifestyle. You will need to allow time to fully heal from surgery before resuming extreme exercise. You will be able to gradually increase your activity level after surgery to build up to where you are now.
